Launch Your Conservation Career as one of Rosie’s Interns

Rosie’s Interns is Manx Wildlife Trust’s new Island‑wide internship programme, created to support and inspire the next generation of conservation professionals. Each year, four interns join our land, sea and community teams to gain real‑world experience across the Isle of Man’s forests, coastlines and wild spaces. Interns work within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, receiving structured training, hands‑on fieldwork opportunities and mentoring to help them take their first steps into careers in conservation, ecology, environmental science and nature engagement.

Interns are based in Thie Vunn, our shared accommodation in the heart of Peel, a historic fishing village on the west coast of the Isle of Man. The property was kindly fully refurbished and donated to MWT in 2025. This act of generosity is the reason for our internship programme's name, Rosie's Interns. This welcoming home provides a comfortable, fully equipped base from which interns can live, learn and connect with each other throughout their time in the Island. Located just minutes from MWT’s headquarters, the harbour and coastal trails, Thie Vunn creates a supportive living environment where interns can build friendships, share experiences and feel part of the Manx conservation community.

MWT offers three distinct internship pathways, each providing a different route into the conservation sector. The two Terrestrial Conservation Interns focus on woodland restoration, native tree propagation, habitat management and ecological surveying, working across MWT nature reserves and with our consultancy team. The Marine Intern supports shoreline surveys, marine wildlife monitoring, citizen science and public engagement around the Island’s rich coastal environment. The Engagement Intern works with schools, communities, events and communications, helping people connect strongly with nature through education, interpretation and creative outreach. Together, these roles offer a well‑rounded introduction to conservation practice on the Isle of Man.

UK Overseas Territories Participation

Each year, at least one intern will be recruited from one of the 14 UK Overseas Territories, creating a powerful exchange of knowledge between the Isle of Man and other small island communities. Territories such as St Helena, Bermuda, the Falkland Islands and the Cayman Islands face many of the same environmental pressures as our own Island, and this programme provides opportunities to share skills, experience and approaches to conservation. Welcoming a UKOT intern each year strengthens international links, supports capacity building and ensures that Rosie’s Interns contributes to nature recovery far beyond the Isle of Man.

Support Rosie’s Interns

To help launch this programme and ensure it remains accessible to people from all backgrounds, MWT is seeking support from donors and sponsors to cover a number of essential items for the interns and their home at Thie Vunn. We are fundraising for a £6,000 annual living‑costs stipend to make the internships more equitable, as well as four laptops (£2,500) to support fieldwork and reporting, and four single/double multifunction beds (£3,000) to furnish the bedrooms. The historic house also requires window dressings (£8,000), along with IT and WiFi infrastructure (£2,000), an annual training budget (£8,000) and a small amount for general furniture and equipment (£2,000). Every contribution, large or small, directly supports the next generation of conservation professionals. Anyone interested in sponsoring an item or contributing to the programme can contact graham@mwt.im
