Invertebrate group

The ‘Invert’ group are a group of local naturalists and people wanting to learn more about invertebrates. It was started in early 2019 following discussions between Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT), Manx National Heritage and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. The group aims to raise the profile of invertebrate recording and conservation on the Isle of Man.

MWT led the way in forming the group, encouraged by interest shown at a MWT workshop on identifying ground beetles in April 2019. Dawn Colley, MWT Education and Biodiversity Officer, took on the task of organising meetings in the field and indoors, in collaboration with local naturalists Steve Crellin and Kate Hawkins.

The group partake in a range of activities. Through the spring and summer months we do fieldwork, which explores different areas of the Island including moorland, streams, wetlands, and sand dunes. It’s a great way to explore the different habitats the Island has on offer. The outings include field observations and use of a variety of techniques such as sweep netting, malaise trapping, pit falls, pond dipping.

During the winter period the group is based indoors with sessions to grow identification skills using microscopes, books and keys, plus working alongside other groups and individuals with key knowledge, such as the Manx dragonfly and damselfly group. We have invited guest speakers to run workshops such as a ground beetle workshop run by professional entomologist, Stuart Corbett. The group also encourage recording of specimens which helps add to the valuable data we have of Manx invertebrates.

The group is aimed at adults and open to anyone, whether you just would like to dabble in studying invertebrates, are an intermediate or even have expert knowledge. We are a friendly and welcoming group united by our love and interest of invertebrates, whether that is flies, ladybirds, worms or slugs! People can join every session or come as you are able to.
