Sandygate Road, Jurby, IM5 1ABJoin our Reserves Manager Tricia for a members-only picnic at Ballamooar Meadow.
About the event
Join us for a tranquil members-only picnic exploring three of the Manx Wildlife Trust's (MWT) meadow nature reserves: Ballamooar Meadow, Fell’s Field, and Moaney & Crawyn’s Meadows.
This guided walk offers a unique opportunity to delve into the challenges of meadow management and to observe a variety of wildflowers, with a special focus on orchids.
Itinerary:
-
Ballamooar Meadow: Begin with a visit to this seasonally wet meadow and curragh, home to over 100 recorded plant species, including the common spotted-orchid and ragged-robin.
-
Fell’s Field: Proceed to this small reserve, a wildflower meadow created through reseeding with green hay. Look out for species such as common knapweed, common spotted-orchid, yellow-rattle, and adder's-tongue fern.
-
Moaney & Crawyn’s Meadows: Conclude with a visit to these traditional hay meadows, rich in wildflowers and part of an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) and Ramsar Site. Notable species include purple-loosestrife, common spotted-orchid, greater butterfly-orchid, and yellow iris.
After exploring Ballamooar Meadow, participants will drive a short distance to the next two sites, where a short walk on a flat surface will lead to the picnic spot.
