Throughout the Summer, local STEM charity, Love Tech, in conjunction with Manx Wildlife Trust and UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man, ran a Wildlife Challenge across eight of our Island’s stunning natural habitats. This educational and biosphere orientated challenge included a competition where 8-12 year olds could win incredible prizes, including a 6th generation iPad mini, kindly donated by Manx Telecom, alongside Manx Wildlife Shop vouchers worth £50 each, kindly donated by Appleby Global, who also sponsored the event as a whole.

The competition ended at the end of September. Recently, representatives of the three organisations therefore selected, then met with the prize winners – each of whom had visited one or more of the sites, used tech to learn more about our Island’s biosphere, then created their own pledge to protect it.

These pledges were then entered into the competition with the prize winners being selected for their thoughtfulness, innovative thinking and enthusiasm.

Heidi Danaher, Mum of Love Tech’s Wildlife Challenge overall winner, Benjamin Danaher Pearce said:

“Benji is absolutely over the moon to be overall winner of such an amazing prize. Since taking part in the challenge, he has been a dedicated litter picking ambassador – but now even more so. He’s even got his grandma a litter picker so she can join him to help tidy up the glens. The whole experience has really got him into nature and into looking after nature. Thank you so much Love Tech – what a brilliant initiative!”

Claire Milne, Love Tech’s Co-founder and Director said:

“On behalf of Love Tech, I’m thrilled with how the challenge worked out. It was fabulous to see so many children engaged in what proved to a great opportunity for families to get out and about over the summer, enjoying nature, the beautiful countryside, and all the Isle of Man has to offer. The judging panel were truly amazed at how considered and thoughtful the children were with their competition entry pledges. In particular, how keen our entrants were to involve their families and others in protecting the Isle of Man’s unique biosphere. It was also a joy and a privilege to meet our young prize-winners, who were each brimming with enthusiasm and ideas about how to look after our environment. This kind of awareness is fundamental when it comes to appreciating our Island and the importance of looking after it for future generations. Overall, this was a brilliant STEM challenge – merging elements of science and technology whilst encouraging children to use innovative and creative thinking to explore our biosphere and ways to protect it. Love Tech is very grateful to our partner organisations here, Manx Wildlife Trust and UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man, and we’re all looking forward to running the challenge together again next summer. A huge thank you also to Manx Telecom for donating the top prize, and to Appleby for providing the runner up vouchers and sponsoring the event as a whole. And last, but not least, a big well done to our innovative prize-winners! Benjamin, for winning overall, and runners up, Toby, Mathilda and Sylvie.”
