Our Work with Nature and Wellbeing

Nature is one of our most powerful wellbeing resources.

A growing body of research suggests that spending time in nature can support physical health, reduce stress, improve wellbeing, increase resilience and strengthen social connections. Discover the science behind nature and wellbeing, explore Green Social Prescribing, and find opportunities to connect with nature across the Isle of Man.

"Nature is not just nice to have; it is a necessity for our physical and mental health."

Nature benefits

A growing body of research suggests that nature plays an important role in supporting human wellbeing. Time spent in nature has been associated with improved physical health, reduced stress, better mental wellbeing, stronger social connections and greater resilience. Researchers have also found that people who feel more connected to nature tend to report higher levels of wellbeing, life satisfaction and sense of purpose. As our understanding of these benefits grows, nature is increasingly being recognised not simply as something to enjoy, but as an important resource for healthier, happier and more connected communities.

Manx Wildlife Trust's work supports wellbeing by creating opportunities for people to connect with nature, with each other and with a shared sense of purpose. Through nature reserves, volunteering, citizen science, wildlife gardening, community projects, events, Green Social Prescribing and partnering with businesses, we help people experience the benefits that research increasingly associates with improved physical health, reduced stress, stronger social connection, greater resilience and enhanced wellbeing. At the same time, participants contribute to the recovery of nature on the Isle of Man, creating benefits for both people and wildlife.
