A-Level Kick Sampling Practical

 

Kick sampling is a useful method for surveying invertebrates in shallow, flowing water, and species can be used as an indicator of health in a ecosystem. Take the opportunity to bring your A-Level students on a field trip with our education officer to learn about this sampling method and other conservation opportunities.

 

Overview: A kick sampling practical to measure for the abundance of invertebrate indicator species in a stream to determine the relationship between species abundance and water quality.

Edexcel Curriculum Link: 'Know the ecological techniques used to assess abundance and distribution of organisms in a natural habitat'.

OCR A Curriculum Link: Understand 'how sampling is used in measuring the biodiversity of a habitat'.

Location: Please let us know on the enquiry form if you have a location in mind. If not, we can advise a suitable stream/river location near you.

We will provide: A student workbook to draw and annotate key indicator species, define key terms, record data, plot findings on a graph and answer analysis questions. All the necessary equipment including tape measure, quadrats, and identification guides.
