Calf of Man – Ornithological Warden
The Ornithological Warden is a full-season, residential post based on the Calf of Man, responsible for running the Calf Bird Observatory and leading its internationally important bird monitoring programme. From early March to early November, you will oversee all daily bird census work, ringing operations and seabird surveys, while ensuring data is accurately recorded and shared with national and international schemes. You will also supervise seasonal volunteer bird wardens and visiting ringers, and play a key role in colour-ringing, Manx Shearwater monitoring, storm petrel work and seabird colony counts.
Alongside core ornithological work, the role includes welcoming and guiding visitors, supporting education and media activity, and working closely with the Estate Warden on wider conservation projects such as rat monitoring, puffin recovery and general site management.
This is a demanding but hugely rewarding role, suited to an experienced ringer and field ornithologist who enjoys working in a small team in a remote island environment, and who is passionate about high-quality data, conservation and public engagement. Accommodation and training are provided on site.
This role is subject to MWT being awarded the contract to manage the site. The recruitment is being run in advance to allow timely appointment if the contract is confirmed, and does not imply that the contract has been awarded.
