The Assistant Volunteer Estate Warden is a varied, hands-on placement based on the Calf of Man, supporting the Estate Warden and Ornithological Warden in running the Calf Bird Observatory and managing this unique island site. From early March to the end of October, you’ll help care for the island’s habitats, buildings and visitors, while also contributing to wildlife monitoring and conservation work.
The role includes welcoming and guiding visitors, supporting education activities and overnight guests, carrying out practical estate and habitat management, and helping with a wide range of wildlife surveys – from seabirds and seals to butterflies, plants and moths. You will also play a key role in the Manx Shearwater Recovery Project, helping to monitor for signs of rats and coordinate rapid response if needed.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys practical outdoor work, working with people, and being part of a small, close-knit team in a remote coastal environment, while contributing to the protection of one of the Isle of Man’s most important wildlife sites. Accommodation, travel to and from the Calf, and a weekly food allowance are provided, along with training and PPE where required.
This role is subject to MWT being awarded the contract to manage the site. The recruitment is being run in advance to allow timely appointment if the contract is confirmed, and does not imply that the contract has been awarded.
