Seal sightings and sitters

How you can help

As seal numbers increase we are seeing them more and more around the Island, which is positive but we need to know where they are and how many there are. That's where citizen science can help. If you spot any seals please report them to our Marine Officer, Lara Howe at lara@mwt.im We need to know where you saw them, a date, how many and if you can, which species they were.

As we experience more stormy conditions as a result of climate breakdown, young seals are hauling up around our coast on unsuitable beaches. Often they are just tired and in need of a rest and this is where our seal sitters come in. They keep a watchful eye on the seals to make sure people and dogs keep their distance and they can get the rest they need before heading back out to sea. However, occasionally they may be injured or sick. If this is the case an assessment is made by the team and as a very last resort the individual may be brought in by one of our marine mammal medics (MMM) and taken to the rehab centre where it is looked after by our trained volunteers, before being released back to the wild when it's ready.

If you would like to get involved please contact our Marine Officer, Lara Howe at lara@mwt.im
