The Isle of Man enjoys a reputation as one that cares and has a conscience for the unique culture, heritage, and community of its past and present. Few other places can identify such a clear and intimate connection between its society, environment, and economy. The landscape and seascape of the Island is an inspiration to its creative communities and treasured by residents and visitors alike. The Biosphere Artist in Residence programme brings together the vision of a sustainable future for Ellan Vannin by bringing people closer to nature and promoting our unique Manx culture and distinctiveness as central to the Island’s image both nationally and internationally.
The year-long post, is in partnership with UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and funded by Isle of Man Arts Council. The residency connects new audiences with Manx nature through the medium of art, the aim being to enable people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy our culture and the arts, as well as inspiring them to act for Manx nature!
We are currently inviting proposals for the 2025-6 Residency. The deadline for submission is Monday 21 September 2025.
This year, the theme of the Residency is 2026, Year of the Manx Language. Proposals are invited that celebrate 2026 as Year of the Manx Language in any creative or artistic medium. Culture Vannin have joined as supporting partner and will provide language and culture assistance and advice. Previous experience with the Manx language is not required – any artist or creative in any medium with the enthusiasm and vision to engage in this year’s brief is warmly invited to apply.
The theme for this year welcomes submissions that invite reflection and expansion on the deep connections between Manx language and culture and Manx landscapes and wildlife.
Ali Hodgson, Biosphere Artist in Residence 2023/24 writes, “The Biosphere Artist in Residence program is a one-of-a-kind opportunity on the Island. Having the time and space to focus on developing an aspect of my practice that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the capacity to, is a rare gift. To also do that with the support, connection, and collaboration with an exceptional group of organisations doing deeply critical work for our Island’s people and wildlife, is life changing. If you have any doubts about applying, take the leap!”
