About the reserve

A large reserve 114ac (46ha), upslope of the Great Laxey Wheel which includes low quality cattle pasture being invaded by bracken and non-native European Gorse. The reserve also includes expansive peatbogs and two hay meadows with a notable wildflower flora. On the steep slopes of the Glen Mooar valley ancient hazel wood pasture can be found. The reserve contains several remnants of former homesteads. Along the Compressor House of the Great Laxey Wheel can be found the Compressor House Cistern, which was used until 1929 to hold water to start the compressors for the Great Laxey Mines, and was formerly supplied by a lade.
