The Isle of Man's natural environment is one of our greatest assets. It shapes our identity, supports our wellbeing, underpins our economy, and forms the foundation of our whole nation UNESCO Biosphere status.
MWT have tried many ways to advocate for nature in previous elections including a manifesto for Manx nature and inviting candidates to answer three simple questions on social media and at local hustings. But we never seem to have been able to get much traction. This time I wanted to try something different. Ahead of the 2026 General Election, Manx Wildlife Trust invited every declared candidate to discuss nature, climate and the environment. All candidates were offered the same opportunity to join me in 30 minute Teams call and asked the same questions. To date 19 have joined me on Teams, two have submitted written responses and one has withdrawn their candidacy following the interview (not because of the interview I might add!).
As a charity we must not give an endorsement of any candidate or political party. Instead, I have provided a brief overview for each constituency and candidate engaged with some direct quotes where relevant. I hope in time the remaining candidates will accept my offer of an interview and there may be more candidates yet to declare. For now, I hope this interim blog helps voters understand some of the candidates' views on environmental issues and identify areas of agreement and difference.
