Join us for an exciting exploration of this beautiful hidden beach as we search for jumping spiders!

The shingle beach, where river sand and stones create a surprisingly rich but often overlooked habitat, may appear lifeless at first glance. But look a little closer, and you’ll discover a wealth of invertebrate life living among the bare stones and sandy banks that line the stream.

There are nearly 40 species of jumping spiders in the UK. These small, daytime hunters are easily recognised by their large, forward-facing eyes and incredible ability to leap onto their prey. Unlike many spiders, they don’t build webs to catch their food. Instead, they use silk to create shelters and attach a safety line when making their impressive jumps.

Come along and join us as we carefully explore this fascinating habitat and see what jumping spiders and other invertebrates we can discover.

What to bring

• Sturdy footwear - the walk includes a shingle beach and some steep sections of coastal footpath.
• Suitable outdoor clothing for the weather.

Bug pots, sweep nets and hand lenses will be provided.

• There are no toilet facilities on site.
• This event is not suitable for children.
• The event is weather dependent. As always, we will email participants if we need to cancel due to inclement weather.
